Not Four Years But For Life.

Initiated 2007

Since my initiation into Alpha Xi Delta in the fall of 2007, I have read countless quotes and sayings about sororities but none ring as true as the one written above. Not Four Years But For Life. You see it written on picture frames, facebook statuses, t-shirts, and written on the hearts of Alpha Xi Delta sisters across the country.

I remember recruitment like it was yesterday. I went into it alone and came out of it with 75 sisters. Was I afraid? Terrified would be the best word to use. Am I happy I made the decision to go through? I can’t even put how happy I am into words. Out of all of the things in my life that I have done, joining the Theta Iota chapter has got to be at the top of my list.

I feel as though everyone struggles with the same questions when they go through recruitment. Will I make any friends? Will I find my home? Am I making the right choice? I can tell you from experience that the answer to all of those questions in YES. There’s something so amazing about coming together with a group of women who share the same common goals and values as you do, and working together to become something great. Alpha Xi Delta is great because of the amazing women that make this sorority great. As an only child, I never knew what the love for a sibling felt like and, although these ladies are not my sisters by birth, they have showed me what that relationship is like and in my heart they will always be mine. The love that grows between friends with bonds like those between sisters is unexplainable. I have truly found myself in Alpha Xi Delta and attribute who I am today to my sorority and my sisters.

Alpha Xi Delta has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Through my time in my chapter I have grown to become the woman I am today; I have truly realized my potential. I have become a strong, more independent woman and have truly come to know my self-worth through the help of the amazing sisters that I have been blessed with. Being a part of such a wonderful organization and being around so many wonderful women made me want to become a better person, sister, and friend, and pushed me to strive to be the best woman I can be. I wouldn’t trade a single day, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

As an alumni of this wonderful chapter I realize now more than ever how those words you read above ring true. Not Four Years But For Life. It has been 9 months since I have left my chapter and although I miss them more than anything, the love and support from my sisters is never ending. Whether it is a simple text message or facebook post, I know that they are always there and always have my back. The bonds of sisterhood are one of the most remarkable things, and I love knowing that because of my sisterhood I am able to be a part of that.

If I could give any pieces of advice to future sorority women it would be these: hold onto the friendships that you make because they will last forever. Take a camera with you where ever you go and document everything, your time in the chapter will be over before you know it. Attend as many events as you can and get to know as many people as possible, in and out of your chapter. Above all, strive to be the best sister you can be. Not only does the success of your chapter rely on every sister, but the successes of the friendships you make during your time rely on it as well. What you put in is what you will take out. Trust me, you will not regret this decision.

There is nothing better in the world than a group of friends getting together and reminiscing on old memories. Lucky for me I am able to continue to keep in touch with my sisters as I complete my master’s degree at FAU. It warms my heart to see my letters on campus and watch my chapter grow more amazing every day. The best part about it, though, is the constant support that I still receive from sisters regardless of my alumni status. The transition from active sister to alumni has proven to me that the bonds formed between sisters really are some of the strongest bonds created. I love my sisters, I would do anything for them and the success of our chapter, and I look forward to watching their continued success in the future.

If you get a chance to join a sorority, do it. Forget about everything you think and take a chance. Do something you never thought you would do. Meet people that you would have never met. Become the best you that you can be. You can make a difference. Be the change you wish to see in the world. It is an unforgettably life changing experience. Friends change, lovers leave, but sisters are forever.
